<body><![CDATA[A genre resuscitated by the Paris-based Gotan Project, tango is apparently what hip kids are into these days. Even if you choose to disregard the hype, much of this compilation will have you wishing you could master some simple steps and move to Buenos Aires. The current scene’s eclecticism is to the fore here, with the Gotans’ remix of Sarah Vaughan being remixed elsewhere on the album before meeting Chet Baker on a third track. Astor Piazzolla, the man whose accordion work defines the sound of tango, makes an appearance, tweaked and twisted by Koop; the sublimely named Matthew Herbert Big Band bring a hint of Come Dancing (back when it was good) to the party, and the cult Swiss fusionist Axel Krygier conjures up what can only be described as the soundtrack to a 1950s French surrealist animation. It wouldn’t be going too far to suggest that the first four or five tracks are the most fun you will have with music all year (although the implication that the rest are not as good would be a little unfair).
